Traumatic TMJ ankylosis management
Abstract
Traumatic TMJ injuries such as disc displacement or tearing, acute synovitis, TMJ ankylosis, traumatic arthritis, or effusion usually develops after facial trauma. Traumatic injury induced TMJ disorders present complex clinical scenarios, necessitating a thorough understanding of etiology, diagnostic modalities, and treatment modalities. We delve into the intricacies of traumatic TMJ injuries, encompassing anatomical considerations, clinical manifestations, and the impact on patients’ quality of life and to obtain an accurate and timely diagnosis. It is still very controversial about what treatment modality shall be used for TMJ injury. This review explores the multifaceted challenges and evolving strategies in the management of traumatic TMJ injuries encompassing both conservative and surgical interventions. Non-invasive approaches, including physiotherapy, pharmacotherapy, and occlusal splint therapy, are evaluated for their efficacy in managing pain and restoring joint function. Surgical interventions, such as arthroscopy, open joint surgery, and total joint replacement, are explored with a focus on their indications, outcomes, and potential complications. The evolving role of regenerative therapies, such as platelet-rich plasma and stem cell therapy, is also considered in the context of tissue healing and functional restoration. In conclusion, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of traumatic TMJ management, offering insights into the current state of knowledge, contemporary treatment modalities, and future directions in addressing the complexities of these challenging clinical scenarios.
