Radiation therapy in treatment of head and neck cancer has contributed to improved survival rate of cancer patients. However, this is accompanied by a potential rise in post radiation complications including radiation induced malignancies and osteoradionecrosis. Radiation Induced Osteosarcoma (RIOS) is rarely reported. We report an unusual case of RIOS involving the parotid gland and mandible that was initially misdiagnosed as Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) and provide a comprehensive review of the literature.

Fawaz Alotaibi, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at LSU Health Shreveport. He is originally from Saudi Arabia. He obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from King Saud University at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 2010. Then, He moved to the United States and completed Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Internship and Residency programs at Jackson Memorial Hospital/ University of Miami 2013-2018. Following graduation from residency, he completed two years fellowship in Head and Neck Oncologic/Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at LSU Health Shreveport in 2020. In 2023, he completed Master of Biomedical Sciences in Cellular Biology and Anatomy from LSU Health Sciences Center at Shreveport, LA. He is board certified with the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) since March 2020. Also, board certified by the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) with Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Head and Neck Oncology and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery. Today, he serves as Assistant Professor of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at LSU Health Shreveport with special interest in Head and Neck Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction. He has many publications and book chapters and also a reviewer / editor of several reputed journals.
