Robot - assisted (single-port) head and neck tumor resection: A single - center retrospective study
Abstract
Objective: To investigate the value and safety of robot-assisted head and neck cancer surgery in a single center.
Methods: The safety and efficacy of two different robotic systems (multi-port and single-port) in Head and neck Surgery Center of Sichuan Cancer Hospital from June 2022 to August 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. The most common surgical diseases and surgical approaches were retrospectively analyzed. The quality of life and the completeness of resection were evaluated by supervisor questionnaire, objective scale and imaging review.
Results: A total of 89 cases of robot-assisted head and neck tumor resection were performed by imported Da Vinci robot, including 70 cases of thyroid cancer surgery, 19 cases of non-thyroid surgery (submandibular gland tumor resection and parotid gland tumor resection), and 10 cases of domestic single-port robot assisted surgery. All operations were performed successfully without conversion to open surgery. The axillary approach is the most common approach for robotic surgery. Postoperative imaging examination showed that the tumor was completely removed and no serious complications occurred. According to the supervisor questionnaire and objective scale, robot-assisted head and neck tumor resection has better cosmetic effect of neck without scars, the average length of hospital stay is not significantly longer than that of traditional open surgery, and the postoperative quality of life and patient satisfaction are higher.
Conclusion: Robot-assisted head and neck tumor resection is safe and effective. Thyroid cancer, parotid gland and submandibular gland tumors are common indications for robot-assisted head and neck surgery. The patients have good cosmetic effect, quality of life and satisfaction after operation. The high cost of surgical robot surgery is the main reason restricting its wide application.
